Material Flow Analysis

While companies invest heavily in optimizing their production processes, the analysis of material flow is often an after thought, leading to higher than expected material handling and indirect labour requirements. To identify waste in material handling, we follow a two-phase methodology in material flow analysis:

1 Phase 1 - Static Analysis
 
We develop material flow diagrams of your facility that rapidly calculate the distance, time and cost of material moves. You can quickly assess the impact of part locations, container capacities, aisle widths, demand profiles and material handling. Since the diagrams are automatically generated off an AutoCAD™ layout of your facility, evaluation of multiple scenarios is far simpler, helping you to quickly narrow down options.
 
We use Flow Planner™ (a product of Proplanner Inc, www.proplanner.com) to analyze material flow paths and indirect labour utilization.
   
1 Phase 2 – Logistics Simulation
 
Once an optimal configuration has been identified in Phase 1, we develop a detailed 3-D logistics simulation of the facility to visualize and validate the proposed configuration.

Emulation

The terms simulation and emulation are often used quite interchangeably – however there exists a distinct difference.  Traditional simulations play a pivotal role in optimizing the design of a facility by embedding rules that govern the process flow.  Emulation is the next-generation application of simulation in which the simulation is driven by the real-world software & hardware. 

The biggest benefit of emulation is the significant cost reduction during commissioning.  A 3-D emulation model allows you to verify if your hardware and software is functioning as per specs.  Imagine validating your controls logic by hooking up your PLC to the simulation; or debugging your WMS software by having it “talk” to the simulation – you have now created a 3-D virtual offline test bed that is a highly accurate representation of your facility.  You can even train your staff prior to commissioning – the possibilities are endless!
